But rather than bowing to financial pressures and sending his son to the local state school Urbano took out a loan from relatives to ensure his son remained at the private school but only until he finished primary education. His father Urbano Fellini's business declined sharply as did his salary, with the result that he could not afford to keep up payments for Federico's private school education. Following the First World War, the economic crisis proved devastating for an area so reliant on tourism and related industries.
